The right of withdrawal in an e-shop is one of the most important compliance points for every online store that sells to consumers. The 14-day right of withdrawal already applies, but from 19 June 2026 , B2C e-shops that conclude contracts through an online interface must also provide an electronic withdrawal function, that is, a clear online means, often described as a “withdrawal button”.

For stores on WooCommerce, PrestaShop and Shopify, this is not just an addition to the terms of use. It is a technical, operational and UX process that must be connected to orders, emails, return requests and internal documentation.

What is the right of withdrawal in an e-shop?

The right of withdrawal in an e-shop allows the consumer, in most distance purchases, to cancel the purchase within 14 calendar days, without having to explain the reason. For products, the deadline usually starts from receipt. For services, it is calculated from the conclusion of the contract.

The official European portal Your Europe explains the basic framework for returns and withdrawal in online purchases. In Greece, the right is provided for in Law 2251/1994 on consumer protection, as amended, among others, by Law 4933/2022.

Withdrawal button 2026: what changes from 19 June 2026?

From 19 June 2026, compliance is not limited to a “Returns Policy” page. The Directive (EU) 2023/2673 introduces an obligation for an electronic withdrawal function in relevant online B2C contracts.

The function must be visible, legible, easily accessible and available during the withdrawal period. In practice, the consumer must be able to submit their decision electronically, the relevant order or contract must be identified, and they must receive confirmation on a durable medium, such as email, with the content and time of submission.

Why isn’t a simple e-shop returns policy enough?

Many e-shops use general phrases such as “no returns” or “returns are examined case by case”. In B2C sales, such wording can create a serious problem when it does not take into account the legal right of withdrawal and its exceptions.

If the consumer is not properly informed about the right of withdrawal, the deadline can be extended by up to 12 months after the end of the initial period. This means an incomplete policy is not just poor UX. It can create greater commercial and legal exposure.

When does the right of withdrawal apply?

In most online B2C sales, the customer has a 14-day right of withdrawal. This usually concerns retail products such as clothing, shoes, accessories, home goods, physical books, electronics and other products, unless a specific legal exception applies.

Withdrawal is not the same as a return due to a defective product. The consumer does not need to prove a defect. They exercise the right to change their mind within the legal deadline.

Which categories are exempt from withdrawal?

Law 2251/1994 provides for specific exceptions. Indicatively, the following may be excluded: made-to-order or personalized products, products that spoil or expire quickly, sealed health or hygiene products that have been unsealed, sealed software or audiovisual material that has been unsealed, bookings for a specific date, and digital content under certain conditions.

Digital products, such as software, plugins, themes, license keys, e-books and digital downloads, need special attention. To lawfully lose the right of withdrawal, the consumer’s prior express consent to immediate performance is generally required, along with acknowledgment that they lose the right of withdrawal and the relevant confirmation from the supplier.

What applies to physical books and e-books?

Physical books sold online are not generally exempt from withdrawal. The customer normally has a 14-day right of withdrawal, unless there is a special case, such as a personalized edition or made-to-order product.

E-books are a different case, because they are digital content. They require a proper consent flow before immediate delivery and clear information about the loss of the right of withdrawal, where this applies.

What fines can an e-shop face?

Failure to comply with consumer protection obligations can lead to administrative sanctions. Under the framework of Law 2251/1994, as amended, fines are provided that may start from 5.000€ and reach much higher amounts, depending on the seriousness, repetition and extent of the violation.

For violations with a broader or Union-wide dimension, the level of sanctions may also be linked to a percentage of annual turnover. That is why compliance should not be treated as a formal text, but as an organized process.

What should a properly organized e-shop have?

A WooCommerce, PrestaShop or Shopify store needs a complete withdrawal flow, not just a static terms page. In practice, the following should exist:

  • a clear withdrawal and returns policy page,
  • a distinction between withdrawal, exchange, defect and warranty,
  • reference to the legal exceptions,
  • a withdrawal form or electronic function,
  • special checkboxes for digital products, where needed,
  • automatic confirmation of receipt of the request,
  • recording of the date and time of submission,
  • linking the request to the order,
  • an internal workflow for review, product return and refund,
  • documentation for compliance purposes.

WooCommerce, PrestaShop and Shopify: each platform needs a different implementation

WooCommerce withdrawal

In a WooCommerce e-shop, the solution may include custom checkout fields, special checkboxes for digital products, a withdrawal form, custom order statuses, email notifications and a connection to refund workflows. If the store has complex products, subscriptions or digital licenses, the mapping must be done per product category.

PrestaShop returns

In PrestaShop, the process can be linked to orders, return requests, customer messages and excluded product categories. The challenge is to have a clear flow for the customer and, at the same time, a clear picture for the administrator.

Shopify returns policy

In Shopify, the implementation depends on the theme, the checkout capabilities, returns apps and customer flows. The electronic withdrawal function must be easily accessible and not hidden away inside a lengthy terms page.
